Liverpool face an anxious wait to find out the extent of Fernando Torres' knee injury after the Spaniard was examined by a specialist on Monday.

The problem ruled Torres, who has had a series of injuries this season, out of Sunday's 0-0 home draw with Fulham.

But despite receiving treatment in Spain, the 26-year-old will now be reassessed later in the week when the specialist hopes to diagnose the issue.

"He will receive treatment over the next few days," read a club statement.

It added: "Fernando Torres was examined by a knee specialist this afternoon in Spain. He received treatment... with the injury being reassessed later this week."

Liverpool's next match is not until Monday, at home to West Ham, but of more significance now is the Europa League semi-final first leg at Atletico Madrid - Torres' former club - on 22 April.

Torres was sidelined for a month after a knee operation in January and before Christmas struggled with a groin injury.

Should Rafa's position now become untenable given that now we are extremely unlikely to attain a Champions League spot?

And any prolonged absence for the Spaniard, who has scored 22 goals this season, would be a further blow to Liverpool, with manager Rafael Benitez admitting his side are virtually out of the Champions League qualifying race.

"To finish in the top four is now very difficult," said Benitez. "The difference is maybe too much."

Benitez has always vowed that Liverpool would finish in the top-four in the Premier League, but that promise now looks unlikely to be fulfilled with his side six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand over their Merseyside rivals.

"We know the fourth position is a little bit far away," said Benitez, whose team has been devilled by inconsistency this season.

"We have to keep going but two or three teams have to make mistakes."
