Lindsey Vonn wins gold! - Yin - 02-18-2010 09:02 PM

When skiing champion Lindsey Vonn sustained a shin bruise during a recent training session in Austria, her dream of winning an Olympic medal was in jeopardy once again. However, Vonn has shown incredible strength and determination as she prepared for and then outclassed the competition to win gold in the women's downhill in Vancouver on Wednesday.

Though the injury has not yet healed, the 25-year-old swished to victory in 1:44:19 seconds down one of the most challenging courses to win her first Olympic medal.

Afterwards, laughing through tears, she told reporters, "I dreamed about what this would feel like but it is much better in real life."

The National Ski Areas Association says that during the decade of 1996- 2006, some 38 people have died in skiing or snowboarding accidents every year.

Safety experts suggest amateur skiers select slopes whose difficulty is appropriate to their skill level and always wear helmets. Everyone who sustains a head injury while skiing should see a doctor for evaluation as some potentially fatal injuries may take time to develop symptoms.

Survivors may consult the website of the Trauma Research Institute, which may help them lead thriving lives in the wake of a sports accident.

Among the other gold winners for the USA on that day were Shawne Davis and Shaun White.
