The reason they put the spread in terms of half point is to avoid having to pay out a draw. Say the spread were 3 points and a team won by three, then neither bettor would win or lose. Since there are no half points in football (or any other sport I can think of), the spread forces you to take a side. You have to look at the line like this. Do I expect the Bears to win by 4 or more, or do I expect the Bears to either lose or win by 3 or less.
